Bihar CM Nitish Kumar questions division of power between PM and Sonia

Questioning the division of power between the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that the current UPA-II regime lacks integrity and goes against what the architects of the Indian Constitution envisaged. He also added that it was false to assume that the Congress Party had failed on several fronts due to alliance compulsions, whereas the fact was that were conflicts within the party itself. There is an issue of a consensus between the largest party itself, Nitish says. He furthur states that since the congress party has come into the power, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his government have been under severe criticism over alleged involvement in various corruption issues such as the telecom scam, the misappropriation of funds of Commonwealth Games funds, manipulation in the allotment of flats in the Adarsh Housing Society, besides many others. The most recent scam linked to the government is the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on a coal scam, which ha resulted in parliament not functioning during this past week. The BJP has held the Prime Minister, who then held direct charge of the coal ministry, responsible for what has been estimated as a notional loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crores by the CAG in coal block allocations, and demanded his resignation.

Observations of CAG are clearly disputable

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said the observations of Comptroller and Auditor General on coal block allocation issue were disputable and asked the opposition to debate the matter in Parliament to allow the country to judge where the truth lay. The Prime Minister said that he wished to make a statement in the House on the issue but the opposition did not give him the opportunity. Dr. Singh tried to convey that he wanted to clear the air on the issue but the opposition is unrelenting. The Lok Sabha was later ordered adjourned.

After three decades, charges framed in Behmai massacre case

Over three decades after the gang of Bandit Queen Phoolan Devi massacred 20 persons, including 17 members of the Thakur community at Behmai, a local court in Kanpur has framed charges against the four of the surviving accused. The four have been accused of dacoity and murder. The court also issued non- bailable warrant against three of the absconding accused. Bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi was shot dead by three assailants outside her residence in New Delhi on July 25, 2001, while eight other accused have been killed by police in separate encounters.Phoolan Devi and her gang had on January 30, 1981 stormed the village of Behmai in Kanpur Dehat district and rounded up and shot to death 20 persons. This was reportedly to avenge the gang rape she had suffered at the hands of the Thakurs in the village. After a long time along with 10 gang members she had surrendered before the Madhya Pradesh government in February 1983. She spent 11 years in Gwalior Central Jail in Madhya Pradesh and was released without any trial in 1994. Then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav withdrew all criminal cases, including the Behmai massacre case, against Devi in public interest, a decision challenged by the families of the victims in the Supreme court.

Chiranjeevi Keen on Getting Minister Post For Thota

Rajya Sabha member Chiranjeevi is very keen on getting minister post to Ramachandrapuram MLA Thota Trimurthulu, is the buzz going on in the political circles. It is to be recalled the Congress could bag only two assembly seats out of 18 in the recent bypolls. Trimurthulu and Kotthapalli Subbarayudu are the two Congressmen who emerged victorious in the bypolls. Incidentally, both of them belong to the same community to which Chiranjeevi belongs.

According to sources, Chiranjeevi is trying to get Trimurthulu accommodated in the state cabinet. As Excise Minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana resigned and is in jail at present, Education Minister Pardhasaradhi is holding additional charge of the excise ministry. Chiranjeevi wants to get excise portfolio for Trimurthulu and it wouldn't be difficult for him, going by the position Chiranjeevi has in Congress now. The only thing that is coming in his way is Trimurthulu's past record of pending criminal cases. People might have forgotten the 1997 sensational case against Trimurthulu of tonsuring of a dalit youth, but the recent land dispute is still fresh in their minds.

Reliable sources inform that the government, in a bid to oblige Chiranjeevi, has discreetly withdrawn the land dispute case against Trimurthulu and a G.O. to this effect has already been issued

Balakrishna's son flees fearing cops!

Tollywood actor Balakrishna’s 18-year-old son Tarakarama Mokshagna, who recently appeared in a public event along with his dad and evoked speculations that he might soon enter into films, jumped out of his car and ran away, when the Banjara Hills traffic police intercepted the vehicle in which he and his friends were travelling in an inebriated condition. The incident took place on Sunday wee hours in Banjara Hills. Traffic police caught Mokshagna’s friend Venkat who was driving the car in a drunken state and seized the car. According to police, as part of their regular crackdown on drunken driving they had set up a check-post at VLCC near the MLA Quarters on Road No. 12, Banjara Hills. During the checks, they detained a Tata Safari vehicle (AP 16 BK 1) in which the six youngsters were travelling in an inebriated condition. Mokshagna had a weekend party with his friends and was returning home via Jubilee Hills Check post when the police intercepted the vehicle. “We tested Venkat who was driving the car and the breath analyser displayed 77 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood as against the permitted level of 30 mg. Based on the report, we registered a case and seized the vehicle,” said K. Balakrishna Reddy, traffic inspector, Banjara Hills. While they were testing Venkat, Mokshagna who sat beside him got down from the vehicle and ran away from the place. “We don’t know why he ran away as there’s no case against him," he added.

So it's a double whammy for the Oberoi family. “Vivek is elated with this happy coincidence. Both Priyanka and Meghna are due around the same time (February-March). The entire family is very happy, especially, Vivek’s parents — veteran actor Suresh Oberoi and Yashodahra Oberoi,” an insider close to the family said. Jim Carrey Currently Being Courted to Play The Colonel in 'Kick-Ass 2'

It might be time for Jim Carrey to make a comeback. That's not to say that Jim Carrey has been gone, but his ventures like Mr. Popper's Penguins, A Christmas Carol, Fun with Dick and Jane and Yes Man have all been underwhelming to say the least. I Love You Phillip Morris was a step in the right direction, but not exactly spectacular. Now with Dumb & Dumber To still a big possibility to film in 2013, there's a chance Carrey could return to his former glory and Deadline has word on a new role that could help as the actor is being courted by Universal for a supporting role as The Colonel in Kick Ass 2. That just sounds awesome! In addition, it sounds like the film will indeed take the comic title of Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, but not all of the comic will likely make it into the film. One element that's a certain inclusion though is the creation of the newly formed "Justice Forever" group of superheroes which Kick-Ass joins in the sequel. Donald Faison is playing Dr. Gravity and Robert Emms is playing Insect Man, two members of the team, and Carrey would be playing The Colonel, who is known as Colonel Stars in the comic book. The character used to work for John Genovese (the character is Mark Strong's Frank D'Amico in the movie), but along with another henchman, becomes a born-again Christian before Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl attack the organization and take all of them out. In the comic, The Colonel is responsible for starting Justice Forever along with another man from the aforementioned criminal organization who goes on to be called Lieutenant Stripes. We're not sure how Justice Forever is going to play out on the big screen, but having Carrey on the team with Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz would be incredible. Apparently the actor is a big fan of Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the first film, but this is far from a done deal right now, especially since Vaughn isn't directing the sequel. Personally, I hope this works out so we can see Carrey really cut loose in a comic book movie again.

PM: 42% Malnutrition childrens, National shame

New Delhi,January 10: India has the highest number of stunted children in the world. Almost 42 per cent of the children in the country numbering over 61 million are malnourished and stunted according to the Hunger and Malnutrition Report released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The report says that one in three malnourished children in the world is an Indian.
The Prime Minister's called the findings a national shame while pointing out that only one in five Indian children had acceptable levels of nutrition. The report reveals that malnutrition is extremely severe in 73,0000 households in 112 districts in seven of the poorest states.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called malnutrition in the country "a national shame" on Tuesday as he released a major survey that found 42% of children under five were underweight.
"The problem of malnutrition is a national shame," the Prime Minister said while releasing the first-ever citizens' report on child malnutrition.
The statistics in the HUNGaMA (Hunger and Malnutrition) report say that every third malnourished child on the planet is an Indian. The report, on the survey conducted by Naandi Foundation, has been made at the insistence of the Citizens' Alliance against Malnutrition.
Manmohan Singh said that the government cannot rely solely on the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) to tackle malnutrition. "Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of malnutrition is unacceptably high," he said.
Pointing out that India had not succeeded in reducing the levels of malnutrition fast enough, he said, "Though the ICDS continues to be our most important tool to fight malnutrition, we can no longer rely solely on it."
"What concerns me is that 42 per cent of our children are still underweight. This is an unacceptably high occurrence," he said.
"Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of under-nutrition in the country is unacceptably high. We have also not succeeded in reducing this rate fast enough," the 79-year-old prime minister added.
Singh said the findings of the report by an alliance of non-government organisations were both "worrying and encouraging."
Malnutrition among children had come down, he said, but remained an "unacceptably high occurrence."
"What concerns me is that 42% of our children are still underweight," he added.
The Prime Minister has announced multi-sectoral programmes for 200 districts that have high malnutrition levels.
100 worst districts are in the poorer states. "The result of the survey is both worrying and encouraging," the Prime Minister said.

Students used bluetooth, cell cameras to leak AIIMS test

New Delhi, January 10: Five persons, including an MBBS student, were arrested for their alleged involvement in leaking the question paper of the All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination, conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Sunday.
Police said Mohit Chaudhury, a second-year MBBS student at a medical college in Ujjain, was the mastermind of the racket which involved the use of Bluetooth technology and software. They were feeding six candidates, including a doctor from a medical college in Rohtak.
According to police, the accused would take photos of the question paper and transfer images to an expert at a centre in Greater Noida. Police, however, arrested five persons before the examination got over.
They had used mobile phones, handsfree devices and skin-colour earphones, connected via Bluetooth and stitched inside specially designed shirts.
The examination was meant to fill 50 per cent post-graduate seats in government colleges across the country and was being held at 156 centres.
Chaudhury was the first to be arrested. Kapil Kumar (27), an MBA from Jamia Millia Islamia, Krishan Pratap Singh (27), an MBA from IIMT-Meerut, Dr Amit Punia (23), an MBBS from PGIMS Rohtak, and Bhishma Singh (27), a computer programmer, were arrested later.
Police said the accused planned to charge the candidates between Rs 35 lakh and Rs 40 lakh, after completion of the examination. To ensure payment was made, the accused kept with them original certificates of the candidates.
Chaudhury was arrested after police received a tip-off that he would be coming to meet his associates at Pragati Maidan and would be carrying the question booklet. “The Maruti car was intercepted and 23 pages of the question booklet were recovered from Chaudhury, a resident of Bulandshahr in UP,” said Ashok Chand, DCP (Crime).
“A team was then sent with the booklet to AIIMS to verify if the recovered copy tallied with the original question booklet. The Controller of Examination confirmed that it was a true copy,” Chand said.
Chand said Kumar and Singh were appearing for the entrance tests, posing as doctors and on false MBBS registration numbers. Both had a mobile phone and a Bluetooth device stitched into their shirts.
“They took the photos of the booklet and forwarded the images to Chaudhury,” said Sanjay Bhatia, Additional DCP (Crime).
